Treat urinary difficulties from prostate enlargement (BPH) with prostate artery embolization (PAE)

A minimally invasive, image-guided procedure to treat urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate.

A highly effective treatment for BPH

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, is a common non-cancerous condition that affects about half of men in their 50s and up to 90% of men over 80.

If left untreated, an enlarged prostate can cause serious issues such as urinary tract infections, bladder stones, kidney damage, or complete inability to urinate.

Prostate artery embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive procedure that offers an effective outpatient treatment for men with moderate to severe BPH symptoms. If you’ve been diagnosed with BPH, PAE can provide fast relief without surgery.

Is PAE right for you?

Most men with BPH suffer from ongoing symptoms including…

a frequent or urgent need to urinate (especially at night)
a weak urine stream
difficulty beginning urination or dribbling at the end
an Inability to completely empty the bladder
are not actively trying to get pregnant

Prostate artery embolization is recommended for patients who:

have urinary difficulties from an enlarged prostate
have not been able to control their these symptoms with medication alone
do not wish to have surgery or are high-risk surgical candidates

The PAE procedure

Guided by live X-ray imaging, an interventional radiologist (a specialized type of doctor), inserts a tiny catheter into an artery in the patient’s wrist, and then guides it through the body’s blood vessels to the arteries supplying blood to the prostate. Tiny beads are released through the catheter and into the arteries, decreasing blood flow to the prostate and causing it to shrink. This decrease in size leads to a reduction in symptoms and a return to more normal urinary function.

Benefits of PAE

Less invasive
Entirely outpatient - no overnight stay in the hospital required
High success rate (75%-95%)
Fewer complications reported compared to surgical options
Low risk of sexual side effects
